You can also keep your decals on your material - this can be solved by clicking the Alt key, allowing you to switch out your materials but keeping these in their place. Also, if you want to edit some materials or texture maps, it is really easy to do just by dragging sliders and checking the instant feedback from your screen. The material library exists mostly for real-world materials, and these are easily applied by dragging them onto your model. Making the right choice here for your project is very dependent on how you will apply the materials. When you import your model you can choose whether you want to keep your objects split by Material or by Group.
